NubianNewYorkers - Your Health Is More Than What You Eat: Why Cardio Matters at Every Age!

When we think about health, we often focus on what we put into our bodies—and what we avoid. But there's another piece of the puzzle we shouldn't overlook: our cardiovascular health.

Your heart, lungs, and legs need regular activity to stay strong. Yet one common mistake, especially as we get older, is spending less time on our feet and moving less than we used to.

And that matters more than you might think.

Moving More Can Help You Live Better

Walking, running, and dancing do more than burn calories. They help strengthen your heart and lungs, improve endurance, and build the leg strength and balance that can help reduce the risk of falls.

Falls can become more dangerous as we age, particularly when muscle strength and balance decline. Staying active helps prepare your body to handle everyday movements with greater confidence.

The bottom line? No matter your age, improving your cardiovascular fitness can help you live a healthier, more active life.

You don't have to become a marathon runner or spend hours in the gym. You just have to start moving.

Small Steps Lead to Big Changes

If you're looking for a strategy to improve your health, remember this:

Your body gets better with consistency, patience, and time.

Think about a baby learning to walk. First comes crawling, then standing, then those first wobbly steps. Little by little, the body learns, adapts, and gets stronger.

Your fitness journey works the same way.

If you haven't been walking regularly, don't expect to run a mile tomorrow. Start where you are, set a small goal, and build from there.

Here are a few simple ways to get started:

- Take the longer route. If you live in the city, get off the subway one stop earlier when practical and walk the rest of the way.
- Park a little farther away. Turn an ordinary trip to the store or an appointment into an opportunity to move.
- Start with a short walk. Try five to ten minutes at a comfortable pace. Gradually increase your time as your endurance improves.
- Try a gym machine. A treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical can help you build stamina at your own pace.
- Take the stairs when appropriate. Start with one flight and build up as your strength and breathing improve.
- Make movement part of your routine. Walk after a meal, take a few movement breaks throughout the day, or schedule a short workout on your days off.

You don't need a complicated plan. You need a realistic one you can stick to.

Here's a Fun Way to Start: Dance!

Here's one of my favorite suggestions because it doesn't require a gym membership, special equipment, or even leaving the house.

On your day off, put on your favorite song and dance from the beginning to the end of the track.

That's it. That's your workout.

If you finish the song and still feel comfortable, put on another one and keep going.

Can't make it to the end? No problem. Remember where you stopped and try again on your next day off.

Over time, you may find yourself dancing longer without getting as winded. Your legs are working, your heart rate is rising, and your body is gradually building endurance.

And here's the best part: you're doing something you enjoy.

When exercise feels like fun instead of a chore, it's often easier to make it a habit.

Build Gradually, Not All at Once

Whatever activity you choose, resist the temptation to do too much too soon.

Start with a manageable amount of activity and repeat it consistently. When it begins to feel easier, add a few minutes, walk a little farther, or increase your pace slightly.

Give yourself time to adjust. Some days will feel better than others, and that's perfectly normal.

If you're older, have been inactive for a long time, or have a chronic health condition, start at a comfortable level and check with a healthcare professional if you're unsure what is safe for you. Stop exercising if you experience chest pain, dizziness, or unusual shortness of breath and seek appropriate medical attention.

The goal isn't to prove how much you can do today. It's to build a body that can do more tomorrow.

Your First Step Starts Today

You don't have to change your entire lifestyle overnight. Start with one small decision: take a walk, dance to a song, ride a stationary bike, or spend a little more time on your feet.

Then do it again.

Remember, consistency beats intensity when you're building a lasting habit. Small efforts, repeated over time, can lead to meaningful improvements in your heart health, endurance, leg strength, and overall well-being.

Your body doesn't need you to be perfect. It needs you to keep showing up.

So put on that song, take that walk, or get moving in whatever way works for you.

Start small. Stay consistent. Give it time. Your future self will thank you.

NubianNewYorkers - October 2026 MAN-CANDY! Treat or Treat!

October begins in Libra season.
In Western astrology, the Sun is generally in Libra from about September 23–October 22. Libra is traditionally associated with balance, relationships, diplomacy, and the scales.

October ends in Scorpio season.
Around October 23, the Sun typically enters Scorpio, which astrology traditionally associates with intensity, transformation, mystery, and emotional depth.

October has two traditional birthstones: opal and tourmaline.
Opal has long been associated with October, while tourmaline comes in an especially wide range of colors. Birthstones are cultural traditions rather than scientific or astrological facts.

October is LGBTQ+ History Month in the United States.
LGBTQ+ History Month was established in 1994 by a coalition of education organizations. National Coming Out Day is October 11, and October also commemorates the 1979 and 1987 Marches on Washington for LGBTQ+ rights.

October has an important connection to Black LGBTQ+ history.
New York City's LGBTQ+ history includes the Black queer communities of the Harlem Renaissance. Figures such as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Alain Locke, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith are discussed by historians in connection with queer cultural life during that era.

Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first Black U.S. Supreme Court justice in October 1967.
Marshall had previously argued landmark civil-rights cases, including Brown v. Board of Education, before becoming the first African American member of the Supreme Court. October is therefore connected to a major milestone in Black American legal history.

October is connected to the history of LGBTQ+ New York.
Long before Stonewall, Manhattan had established queer social spaces. Historians document Bowery "resorts," drag performers, and queer nightlife during the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Halloween is observed on October 31 and developed from traditions associated with Samhain, an ancient Celtic seasonal festival marking the transition from the harvest season into winter. Over centuries, these traditions blended with Christian observances such as All Hallows' Eve.

NubianNewYorkers - Gay Themed Movies To Watch On Amazon Prime Today!

Why Do We Love LGBTQ Movies So Much?

Let’s be honest. Some of us see a movie described as having gay characters, a gay romance, or an LGBTQ storyline and immediately think, “Okay, where do I sign up?”

Maybe you have a friend who loves time-travel movies. Give him a movie about someone going back to 1955, changing the future, getting stuck in 1842, or accidentally meeting himself in 2097, and he is READY. It doesn't matter if the movie is a masterpiece or a complete mess. If there is time travel, he wants to see it.

Well, LGBTQ movies can have that same kind of pull.

You don't necessarily need a deep psychological explanation for why you love them. Sometimes you simply love seeing gay and lesbian characters at the center of the story. But there are plenty of reasons these movies can hit differently for different people.

Maybe you recognize yourself in the characters. There is something special about watching people who look like you, love like you, or experience the world in a way that feels familiar.

Maybe it's about belonging. Watching LGBTQ characters find friends, community, love, and acceptance can remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

Maybe you enjoy the feeling of validation. Seeing gay characters fall in love, screw things up, make up, get their hearts broken, chase their dreams, grow old, laugh, cry and occasionally make spectacularly bad decisions can say something very simple:

Our lives are worth telling, too.

Or maybe you're catching up on stories you didn't get to see when you were younger.

For some of us, there simply weren't that many positive LGBTQ movies around when we were growing up. So discovering them later can feel a little like finding a box of movies that somebody forgot to give you 30 years ago.

And then there's romance.

Come on. We like a good love story!

The flirting. The chemistry. The first kiss. The awkward date. The heartbreak. The reunion. The person who clearly should have been calling three months ago but somehow waits until Christmas Eve.

Sometimes you don't need to analyze it. It's just fun.

You might also love LGBTQ movies because you're curious about other people's experiences. Every gay character isn't representing every gay person, just like every straight romantic comedy isn't representing every straight person. These stories can introduce us to different generations, cultures, personalities, relationships and ways of living.

Maybe you enjoy LGBTQ history. Maybe you like seeing how people found love during times when being open about it wasn't easy. Maybe you're fascinated by the changes in our community and how much the world has—and hasn't—changed.

Maybe some movies remind you of your own past.

A certain song, hairstyle, nightclub, neighborhood, fashion choice or painfully questionable boyfriend can suddenly transport you right back to another time. And before you know it, you're watching the movie while thinking, “Oh honey... I remember THAT era.”

Some movies also give us something we don't always get enough of in real life: a happy ending.

We get to watch the character who was lonely find someone. The person who was hiding finally become comfortable. The couple who couldn't be together finally get their chance. The family finally understands. The person who spent years thinking something was wrong with them realizes there never was.

And sometimes that's exactly the movie we need that day.

Of course, there is also the extremely complicated psychological explanation known as:

“They're hot.”

😂

Let's not pretend that doesn't count.

Sometimes the reason we watch a movie is simply because we like looking at the people in it. We're adults. We can appreciate a good storyline and a good-looking man. These two things can coexist peacefully.

And maybe you just love the genre.

That's probably one of the biggest reasons of all.

Just like some people will watch anything involving vampires, superheroes, murder mysteries, Christmas romance, zombies or time travel, you might see “LGBTQ movie” and think, “Yep. That's my kind of movie.”

At that point, you don't need a 14-page psychological report.

You know what you like.

And here's the really fun part: you don't have to love every LGBTQ movie for the same reason.

One might make you laugh. Another might remind you of your younger days. One might introduce you to a story you never knew. Another might make you cry into your popcorn. One might have an incredible plot.

And one might simply have a ridiculously handsome man walking around in a towel.

We contain multitudes.

So if you love gay-themed movies, LGBTQ characters, queer storylines or just stories where people from our community get to be the main characters, there's absolutely nothing strange about having a whole list of them ready to watch.

And that's exactly what we're doing today.

I've pulled together a few LGBTQ movies available on Amazon Prime that you can check out right now.

So grab your snacks, get comfortable, cancel whatever boring thing you were about to do, and settle in.

Find something you haven't seen before. Discover a new favorite. Laugh. Cry. Fall in love with the characters. And most importantly... Click on the titles to watch.. ENJOY!

NubianNewYorkers - SEPTEMBER 2026 MAN-CANDY! - enjoy & share

September is a good month to remember that many of the gay men who came of age after Stonewall helped create the bars, clubs, publications, organizations, and cultural spaces that younger LGBTQ+ people sometimes take for granted.

The first gay-rights organization in the United States was founded in September.
The Society for Human Rights, founded in Chicago in 1924, is generally recognized as the first documented gay-rights organization in the United States. It was inspired partly by Germany's pioneering gay-rights movement.

all fashion begins taking over in September.
For gay men who love clothes, September is basically the Super Bowl of fashion. The major fashion calendar moves into the Spring/Summer following year shows, while stores are filling up with fall clothing. Translation: It's officially time to judge everyone's coat.

September is a huge month for New York culture.
Broadway, museums, galleries, fashion, restaurants, nightlife and concerts all come roaring back after summer. For LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, September can feel like the city has turned the volume back up.

September is National Hispanic Heritage Month—starting September 15.
It celebrates the history and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. For LGBTQ+ audiences, it's also an opportunity to highlight the Latino queer artists, activists, writers and entertainers who have shaped American culture.

September is when pumpkin spice takes over the planet.
This one is not technically gay history. But let's be honest: September arrives and suddenly everything—from coffee to candles to body wash—is pumpkin spice. Somewhere, a gay man is already complaining about it while buying one.

Virgos and Libras dominate September birthdays.
September begins under Virgo and moves into Libra around September 22–23. So if you believe in astrology, September gives us a month full of people who either want everything organized perfectly—or want everyone to get along beautifully. Sometimes both. 😂

September is a perfect month for a little reinvention.
There's something psychologically powerful about September. Summer is ending, routines are returning, fashion is changing, and the year suddenly feels like it's entering its final chapter. It's basically the adult version of "New school year, new me."
